Reiki – What It Is and How It Works

What is Reiki?

Most people come to Reiki with a question.

Sometimes the question is for themselves. More often, at least in my work, the question is for an animal.

A dog who has not settled. A horse navigating change. A companion who is moving through something quietly, and a guardian who senses it.

Reiki has been many things over the past hundred years — described, repackaged, branded, retaught, and renamed.

At its root, it is something quieter than all of that.

Reiki is the universal energy that exists in all things. Animals, people, the air around us, everything. It is already here.

What Reiki practice does is different from what most people assume.

The practice is the daily, sustained work of cultivating stillness in myself. That stillness is what allows me to hold steady, attentive presence for an animal who needs support.

What I offer in a session is trained presence. Quiet. Attuned. Consistent.

A session is a meeting place. The animal and I settle into the stillness together. What is already there becomes easier to recognize.

Reiki is gentle, non-invasive, and complementary to veterinary care. It does not replace medical treatment. It offers the conditions for energetic restoration, emotional steadiness, and a return to the animal's own natural balance.

In my work, I focus on supporting the energetic relationship between animals and their guardians — calm, trust, and connection held steady, even during the times they must be physically apart.

Reiki gently supports:

  • Stress reduction
  • Nervous system regulation
  • Emotional balance
  • A deeper sense of ease
  • Cultivation of peace

At Vitalis Light, Reiki is offered with care, intention, and respect for the lineage of the practice — for the animals, and for the guardians who love them.

Why animals respond to Reiki

Animals live in the world differently than we do.

They do not carry the mental constructs of separation that humans do. They do not think of themselves as standing apart from the energy around them. They are simply in it.

This is why animals often respond to a session quickly and directly.

There is nothing in the way. No expectation. No explanation needed. They simply settle.

Animals are also deeply attuned to presence. They recognize steadiness. They recognize stillness.

A session meets the animal exactly where they are.

They are free to move, rest, sit, or shift attention as they choose. The work continues either way.

This is part of what makes Reiki especially well suited for animals who are anxious, in transition, in recovery, or simply sensitive to change. The session does not ask anything of them. It simply offers them a steadier field to settle into.

What is distance Reiki?

Distance Reiki is Reiki offered when the animal and I are not in the same room.

It works for the same reason Reiki works at all. The energy is already present, in all things, everywhere at once. It is not something I send from one place to another.

Distance is not a gap that has to be crossed. Nothing travels from me to the animal. There is nothing to transmit, because the energy is already there, where the animal is.

What a session asks of me is presence. Trained, quiet, attentive presence. That presence is not bound by proximity.

I settle into stillness. The animal settles into the stillness already present around them. We meet in it, the same way we would if I were sitting beside them.

The animal stays in their own home, their own bed, their own routine. Nothing is required of them. They are free to move, rest, or sleep through the entire session.

Distance Reiki is gentle, non-invasive, and complementary to veterinary care. It does not replace medical treatment. It offers the conditions for the animal to settle, soften, and return to their own natural balance, wherever they are.
